Review Policy & Testing Methodology
Our rigorous testing protocols for evaluating electric vehicles: real-world highway range benchmarks, DC fast charging curves, battery efficiency, and uncompromising editorial independence.
1. Testing Philosophy: Real-World Value for EV Drivers
At Autiva, we evaluate electric vehicles from the perspective of real-world drivers backed by reproducible engineering data.
Our primary objective is guiding prospective buyers: determining authentic cost-to-range value, verifying whether manufacturer charging claims withstand extreme weather conditions, and fearlessly highlighting dynamic shortcomings, software glitches, or cabin ergonomic compromises.
2. Laboratory and Road Testing Protocols
Every electric vehicle in our test fleet undergoes standardized evaluation:
- Real-World Highway & Mixed Range: Energy consumption trials across city streets and sustained 75 mph (120 km/h) highway cruising with climate control calibrated to 21°C (70°F). Accurate recording of kWh/100 km and percentage deviation from official WLTP and EPA ratings.
- DC Fast Charging Curves: Connected to high-power DC chargers (150 to 350 kW), we graph the complete 10% to 80% SoC charging curve, measuring peak kW, sustained average speed, and battery preconditioning responsiveness.
- Powertrain Dynamics & Regenerative Braking: Instant torque response, 0-60 mph acceleration benchmarks, driveline stability (RWD, FWD, Dual/Tri-motor AWD), and calibration of regenerative braking systems (true One-Pedal driving).
- Battery Architecture & Thermal Management: Usable vs gross pack capacity in kWh, cell chemistry (LFP, NMC, solid-state), heat pump efficiency, and manufacturer warranty longevity.
- In-Cabin Software & ADAS Suites: Infotainment smoothness, EV-specific route planning with real-time station availability, companion app connectivity, and Level 2+ driver assistance validation.
3. Absolute Editorial Independence
Our reviews are completely unbiased:
- We never accept financial compensation or editorial oversight from automotive manufacturers for vehicle coverage.
- Press fleet vehicles provided by automakers are returned immediately following evaluation periods with zero favorable coverage guarantees.
- Advertising and commercial divisions operate completely detached from our technical road test editors.
4. Five-Star Rating Scale
Our rating scale reflects market competitiveness and engineering execution:
- ★★★★★ (5/5) Class Benchmark: Exceptional EV that leads its segment in energy efficiency, charging speed, driving dynamics, and overall value.
- ★★★★☆ (4/5) Highly Recommended: Outstanding vehicle offering dependable range, swift charging capabilities, and easily forgiven compromises.
- ★★★☆☆ (3/5) Balanced: Reliable everyday transport burdened by notable compromises in range, pricing, or charging speeds compared to key rivals.
- ★★☆☆☆ (2/5) Flawed: Hindered by poor real-world efficiency, a sluggish charging curve, or an uncompetitive price tag.
- ★☆☆☆☆ (1/5) Not Recommended: Crippled by severe software bugs, inadequate real-world range, or poor build quality.
5. Post-Launch OTA Updates and Retesting
Because modern electric cars evolve through over-the-air (OTA) firmware, major software updates that alter charging speed, range, or driver assistance triggers prompt a re-evaluation with a dated update note.
